Communication Repair Series Part 5 of 7
Part 5: Timing Matters in Repair
Why “Too Soon” and “Too Late” Both Backfire
Repair works best when both people are emotionally regulated. Trying to repair too soon can escalate conflict; waiting too long can feel like abandonment.
Healthy pauses include:
- naming the need for space
- committing to return
- following through
Avoidance often disguises itself as “needing time” without reconnection. Repair requires returning to the conversation.
Coming next: What happens when only one person is doing the repair work.
