What can I expect in my first session?
First sessions are known as intake sessions. These sessions are casual, comfortable, and approximately 50 minutes long and cover the initial paperwork including covering informed consent, privacy, practice policies, and a verbal history of your goals, diagnoses, past treatment, family history, etc. At times, these administrative tasks may feel more clinical in nature but helps give me some important background pieces about who you are. The second half of the intake session is more fluid conversation identifying and setting goals so the therapeutic process can begin.
Can therapy really help me?
Yes, it can. Counseling gives you a place where you’re not judged, you’re not told what to do, and you won’t be forced to listen to just one single opinion. I want to give you a place to feel safe to share about yourself. Therapy takes some work at times. To be honest, it can get uncomfortable and messy. But most people leave counseling feeling like the time and energy they put into therapy are well worth it.
How long to therapy sessions last?
A typical therapy session lasts 50 minutes, but we also program 30-minute, 60-minute, and 90-minute sessions. This will be discussed and determined in your first session.
Is therapy confidential?
In general, the law protects the confidentiality of all communications between a client and psychotherapist. No information is disclosed without prior written permission from the client. However, there are some exceptions required by law to this rule. Exceptions include:
Suspected child abuse or dependant adult or elder abuse. The therapist is required to report this to the appropriate authorities immediately.
If a client is threatening serious bodily harm to another person. The therapist is required to notify the police.
If a client intends to harm himself or herself. The therapist will make every effort to work with the individual to ensure their safety. However, if an individual does not cooperate, additional measures may need to be taken.
Can you prescribe medications?
Rochester Therapy Center does not prescribe medications. It is recommended that you see a psychiatrist or a psychiatric nurse practitioner to discuss medication.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to postpone or cancel an appointment, we request that you let us know 24 hours in advance. Perspectives Therapy Center reserves the right to charge for no-shows or cancellations with less than 24 hours notice.
How can I tell if a therapist is a good fit for me?
Here are a few ways that you may go about figuring that out. One way is the “you’ll know when you know” method. It’s important to feel like you connect with someone if they’re going to be your counselor.
Another option is to do a little research and see if anyone specializes in the problems that are bringing you to therapy. That can be really valuable. Most therapists offer consultations to determine if they will be a good fit for you. I offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation for people interested in therapy.
In the end, it really is your decision, and it’s one that you are definitely able to make! If nothing else, you deserve to decide on your therapist.
For parents, it’s going to be the best bet to let your teen have plenty of input in choosing their therapist.
Do you offer a complementary consultation?
Yes, and this is preferred. The free 15-minute consultation is by phone or online. During this time, we can answer any questions you may have. The most important part of this consultation is having enough time to see if you feel like we would be a good fit to work together.

Why pay cash?
One word, “control.” Here is a list of the benefits of paying cash for your session:
1) A mental health diagnosis is required by insurance.
2) Many providers will dictate the type, frequency and longevity of therapy.
3) Insurance companies have access to your records at any time.
4) Many insurance companies do not cover couples/relational or family therapy.
5) The mental health diagnosis required by insurance companies becomes a part of your permanent health care record. This may lead to limitations such as denial for quality life insurance or health insurance later on.
By paying privately or out of pocket, we can assure private pay clients of the highest degree of privacy, flexibility and control of their mental health record allowed by Minnesota state law. Our records are exempt from insurance reporting and random compliance audits. This truly allows our work together to be private. In addition, many insurance companies require a deductible to be met before they start paying, so you may be paying out of pocket anyway. We will work collaboratively to decide how often to attend therapy and you decide what you want to focus on. You have the control, not the insurance company.
