Communication Repair Series Part 2 of 7

Part 2:  Why Repair Feels So Hard

Defensiveness, Shame, and the Nervous System

Many people want to repair—but find themselves shutting down, getting defensive, or avoiding the conversation entirely.

This isn’t a character flaw. It’s often a nervous system response.

When people feel criticized, ashamed, or overwhelmed, the body may shift into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These responses make reflection and accountability feel unsafe in the moment.

Communication games often emerge here:

  • deflection to escape discomfort

  • minimization to reduce emotional intensity

  • avoidance to self-protect

Understanding this helps shift the focus from blame to skill-building.

Repair requires regulation first, not resolution at all costs.

Coming next: How communication games actively undermine repair.
